Dear Parents,

We had another great week last week. We began learning about ways to measure weight. Students were really excited to weigh themselves and then the whole class was challenged to put themselves in numerical order by weight. We also explored comparing weight using a balance scale. This week we will be learning about the 10 subtraction family, another province, and many new special phonics sounds.

Spelling Tests: Tomorrow we will have our test for List #15. We are a bit behind in spelling because of online learning and snow days, so we will have another spelling test on Friday. List #16 will come home tomorrow and we will have that test this Friday. The list is full of sight words we have already learned and we will spend extra time in class to help students be ready for Friday’s test. This will also help us get back in the routine of Spelling Tests being on Fridays.

Below you’ll find information on some theme days coming up this week and a mathletics challenge. If theme days cause extra chaos at your house instead of being just fun, just remember participation is totally up to you.

Have a great week!

Mathletics Competition

Get your math brains on, students! The elementary classes have entered a national competition through Mathletics, an award-winning interactive site that aims to improve math skills through fun activities linked to the Canadian curriculum. Students earn points by completing activities and answering questions in Live Mathletics competitions. We are hoping the enthusiasm surrounding this competition grows and will help to increase our students’ math skills. And, who knows? We may even win a prize. 🙂

The details:

Earning Points

Skill Quests (Quests)

  • 1 correct answer = 10 points
  • 1 correct test answer = 20 points
  • 1 correct “Are you ready” answer = 20 points

Activities (Courses)

  • 1 correct answer = 10 points
  • 1 correct test answer = 20 points
  • 1 correct “Are you ready” answer = 20 points

Live Mathletics

  • 1 correct answer = 1 point
  • 1 correct bonus level answer = 2 points

Students can do Mathletics activities at home as well as in class. And YES, that means they can do it over MARCH BREAK! As long as they are connected to the internet and not using an offline Mathletics app, the points that they earn will count toward the competition.
