Another busy week ahead with skiing and skating for the grade fives. Please take note of the following announcements:
Spelling Tests
As we look ahead to the second half of the school year and plan to cover course content, we will proceed with this change. Each Friday, students write a weekly spelling test to improve and assess their spelling and vocabulary throughout the year. In the past, if there is no school on Friday, spelling tests have been taken the following week. However, this will no longer be the case. If there is no school scheduled for a Friday (ie. PD Day or holiday), spelling tests will be written on Thursday instead. If school is canceled for other reasons on a Friday (ie. inclement weather), spelling tests will be written the next immediate school day after the weekend. Thank you for your continued support in your child’s educational journey at GCS.
Skiing
NEW Skiing forms will be sent home on Monday. Students are not required to have their own ski gear, nor are they obligated to attend this event. If students require skiing lessons, please indicate this on the form. If skiing money was collected from our canceled ski day on February 19th, it will go toward this ski day instead. Please have all money and forms in by Tuesday, March 3rd.
Skating Days
This winter, elementary students will each be going skating on four separate afternoons. The cost of skating is $5 which covers all skating times, Helmets are required. We will be travelling by bus. We are looking for parents to volunteer to tie skates and monitor the ice. If you choose for your child not to skate, then we ask that he or she gets picked up from the school at 12:15 (lunchtime). The grade 5 students will be skating from 1:30-2:00 on Friday, March 6th.
Heritage Fair
Students are to choose a topic that interests them. Their topic must have a Canadian theme such as history, geography or heritage, whether it is local, national, or international. Guiding their research is the essential question: Why should this topic, even in 2020, still be considered important for Canadians to consider? A Heritage Fair project involves much more than doing research on a topic of interest. It also involves putting the research to work. In this case, the information found will go toward the making of a visual display, oral presentation, and an interview. In-class presentations will be on March 25th and 26th and the Heritage Fair will be on March 30th.
