Hello parents,
It’s that time of year when we celebrate literacy and the gift of written language with which God has blessed us! It has been proven that the more children read, the better they become at reading. Furthermore, just 20 minutes a day reading with a child develops important critical thinking skills. As such, all week we will be having activities that involve reading, reading, and more reading! Oh, what fun! Students have already been provided an Olympic Reading Challenge from Mrs. Biech, and are competing for class medals to see who can read the most. Please encourage your child to invest time each day discovering the joy of learning through reading!
Love of Reading Week Schedule
Monday: Dress Up Day
Throughout the following weeks each elementary classroom will be assigned two countries to follow. Students are encouraged come dressed in their teams’ colors on Monday. Grade 3/4 will be following the Netherlands, the host country South Korea, and of course, Canada. Each student will receive their Olympic pass (bookmark) to the Olympic Games. This bookmark can be colored to earn a gold medal for the class.
Tuesday: Favorite Book Day
Students are encouraged to bring a favorite book to enjoy during the day and maybe even share with the class.
Wednesday: Red & White Day
Not only will be celebrate Valentine’s Day by wearing the colors red and white, we will also be celebrating our national pride and cheering on our Canadian Olympians.
Also, as a friendly celebration of Valentine’s Day, students who choose to participate can bring in cards or small treats for their classmates. I will be sending home a list of classmates’ names tomorrow, just to make it easier for students to not forget someone accidentally!
Thursday: Character Dress Up Day
Students are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite book character or an Olympic athlete.
Young Writers Author Release Forms
We are excited to have learned that many of our students from GCS have been chosen to become published authors. Each of the students selected have been provided a release form for parents to sign. If your form is lost but you would still like to have your student’s work published, then please send an email to Ms. Huizing (khuizing@gcspei.ca) so that she can get a new form ready and waiting for you in your student’s classroom for Monday AM.
Bible Memory Verse
The next passage to be memorized is a longer one, but students will have plenty of time to learn it. It is from Colossians 1:15-20:
“15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.”
